Oregon legislation would fix tax disparity for large trucks

After a recent lawsuit in Oregon challenged overcharging large trucks for transportation taxes, multiple bills have been introduced in the statehouse to address the issue. The lawsuit argues that Oregon's weight-mile tax is unconstitutional, unfairly burdening truck drivers. Jana Jarvis, president of the Oregon Trucking Association, advocates for legislative action to rectify the situation. Representative Shelly Boshart Davis introduced a bill requiring a report on needed changes to balance costs between cars and trucks, while two Senate bills aim to lower weight-mile taxes and limit spending by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). Despite recent efforts for a special session to reassess tax collection on large trucks, the request was declined.
